Abounding Grace Radio

We ask for your continued prayers that the Lord would strengthen our feeble efforts to send out his Word and that His name would be gloried through the messages given on Abounding Grace Radio.

Years ago I visited the KARI 550 AM radio station in Blaine, WA. KARI has been broadcasting Christian programs since 1961. As I poked around the studio looking at old records, stacks of eight-tracks, and pictures of past Christian radio hosts such as J Vernon McGee, I was overwhelmed when I looked out of a large window facing the lower mainland of B.C. and right in its path stood seven two hundred and fifty foot towers with a signal operating at five thousand watts. These towers were sending out a signal that could reach to the greater Vancouver, B.C. area which has a population of well over two million people. As I reflected on the providence of God, I wondered what the disciples would have thought about an opportunity like this. The apostle Paul asked the church in Colossae to pray that God would open a door for the word that he would be able to speak the mystery of Christ freely. Imagine if Paul had been handed a microphone while he sat in chains and was told that by speaking the word the entire city of Rome would have the opportunity to hear the gospel? What a door the Lord has opened for us! It was these thoughts that lead to the organizing of Abounding Grace Radio.

Our History

In 2005, the Lynden United Reformed Church, having a desire for doing better at local outreach, approved the weekly airing of sermons on KARI 550 AM. Airing sermons is common approach churches take when utilizing Christian radio. While there are many benefits to this approach, we found that sermons were difficult to air on the radio due to long pausing, rotating audiences, and extensive editing needs. In 2007, the Lynden URC purchased recording equipment and I began recording the content of the sermons in a more conversational manner. We began airing fifteen minute programs Monday-Friday on KARI. This format worked well
and the listener response was much greater. Today we air thirty minute programs five times a week on KPRZ (San Diego) KARI (Blaine, WA) and on weekends on KPXQ (Phoenix). Two years ago the Lynden URC revamped Abounding Grace program and established a board of directors to help develop and manage the program. All members of the Abounding Grace board are committed to the historic Protestant Christian faith and subscribe to the Three-Forms of Unity. The members of the board are Mark Hicks (board chair), Ted Farver, Randy Winter, Ian Mcclure, Gary VanderPol, Jason Vanderhorst, Pastor Gordon, and our very own Jim Jansma. The board meets by Skype every month and we are working hard to make the most of every opportunity to advance the gospel of Christ in our communities.

Our Mission

At Abounding Grace Radio we do not seek to replace the work of the local church, but we view ourselves as an extension of the teaching ministry of the local church. Our mission statement is as follows: The mission of Abounding Grace Radio is to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ from all of Scripture as witness to those who do not believe and to strengthen believers in the truth of God’s Word, the Bible. There are two goals in our mission statement. First, we desire that our messages would be a witness to those who have never heard the gospel of Christ. As you will see in the letters below, there are still many who, even in a post-Christian culture, do not
know the message of salvation by grace alone through faith alone. We desire for the gospel message to be spoken clearly and effectively so listeners they may be brought into a church that faithfully preaches God’s Word. Second, we also realize how many Christians need to be reinstructed in the basic doctrines of the Christian faith and who are not receiving sound Biblical instruction. You will also notice this expressed in the letters below. We desire to strengthen these believers that they may become strong influences in the churches where they attend.

Our Gratitude

We are very thankful to you for your support of Abounding Grace Radio. We had our first annual support dinner in Escondido on May 4. It was a wonderful evening of fellowship and we are thankful to all of you who came to our dinner. We couldn’t do this without your support, so on behalf of every board member we give you our sincerest thank you. There is also an annual dinner in Lynden so if you ever get tired of the sunshine and would like some rain, you are welcome to contact me and I will get you a ticket.

Listener Letters

Good afternoon Pastor Gordon:
I thought I would just send you a wee email letting you know how much I have enjoyed  listening to Abounding Grace these past weeks. I have spent my entire life in the Mormon  church but have drifted away these past few years. I have also been on a leave of absence  from a law firm in B.C. and when on holidays in December a bus driver spoke with me  about the real meaning of Christmas and amongst several things, suggested I listen to your
radio program. I also started visiting a Christian church in my neighborhood and exploring  what a real walk with God could entail. Yesterday with two of the pastors at that church I  accepted Christ.  I just wanted to thank you for the role your radio program has played in me making this  decision. I had never before thought that one could be a Christian and receive salvation  without first being well “on the way to perfection” (Mormons call it ‘perfecting the Saints’).  I had never before realized that one can come to Christ all “messy and broken” and that there is nothing we can do to be worthy of God’s grace.

Dear Chris,
I believe I was listening to you on KARI radio station a few weeks ago talking about  making the decision to turn your life to Jesus over and over and the emotion toll that took.  I was just looking for radio stations on the way to work and came upon this conversation  totally by accident. I didn’t know that KARI station even existed. I have been fighting alcoholism my whole life and have made the decision to turn my life and my will over to
God so many times it hurts. Your conversation smacked me hard! The parallelism was stunning. That day I decided to study the Bible, listen to KARI and start to pray to Jesus to enter my heart. I have struggled with God my entire life. I have always wanted faith, but couldn’t believe. Couldn’t! Every day since then I have been on my knees praying to Jesus, asking him to forgive me and to save me, really not sure, still. You said that one day you will find your will bent and your mind clear; clear as it is the mind of Christ. Every day, every time I pray, tears pour from my eyes. I have been fighting pornography for as long as booze. Being molested for years by friends of the family growing up, I always shrugged it off. In my heart I know that drinking takes away the pain of the pornography and the past and that I could never find God with the disgust of my behavior, always wanting to be free from it,
but always failing.
Today is day number 3 free from pornography after 40 years of daily immersion.

My will has been bent and my mind is clear with the mind of Christ

I just wanted to let you know that your podcast (and broadcasts, which I listen to on KARI  550) are such a huge blessing for me. I’ve downloaded every single one of your podcasts  from iTunes and am absolutely loving them. Thank you for so clearly teaching what God’s  Word says.  I have a question about repentance. I’m wondering exactly what, Biblically, repentance  really means. I’ll shoot straight: I’ve got one in particular sin in my life that I have battled  and struggled with my whole Christian life (13 years now) with no success, and sometimes  I find myself worrying about whether I’ve truly repented and whether I’m really saved or  not. If Christ has really saved me, shouldn’t I have been able to have victory by now? Why  hasn’t He delivered me from this sinful habit in my life when I so desperately want to be?
I’d really appreciate your answer on this.
Thank you so much again for your show!

Dear Pastor Gordon ,
I am sure that many more are being blessed up here, as I would expect that many of your  listeners are actually on this side of the border. Your website is also excellent, with very  helpful resources. I thank God for the work of your church and will continue to pray for you. Since I believe that most of the Christian media is really “lifestyle” Christianity, even though some of that stuff is pretty good too. But it is too much about scratching my itching
ears. Rarely do I hear the pure Gospel in a way that is so encouraging. Its like a tall glass of cool water in the middle of a very long race on a very hot day. I may try to bring my family out one of these Sundays. It is such an ordeal to cross the border since 9/11. But, if we do come, I will be sure to say hello.
May God continue to bless and lead you in this important ministry to the world.
